The University of Mauritius and the World Bank Office in Mauritius have jointly organised a public seminar on the theme ‘The Pursuit of Inclusive Economic Growth: Equality of Opportunity’. The Seminar which was held on Tuesday 10 May 2011 at the Engineering Tower Lecture Theatre of the University of Mauritius marks the first jointly organised activity since the signature of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two institutions on the 29 June 2010.
The theme of the seminar reflects current thinking and research on those factors over which an individual has no control i.e. the personal circumstances of the individual namely parents’ education, family income, number of siblings, the presence of both parents in the house, gender, race and location of residence, and more importantly the impact which these factors, individually and collectively, have on an individual’s likelihood to succeed in life. The Seminar was opened by a presentation by Dr Marcelo Guigale, World Bank Director for Poverty Reduction and Economic Management for the Africa Region and co-author of the World Bank report entitled ‘Do Our Children Have A Chance? The 2010 Human Opportunity Report for Latin America and the Caribbean’.
