Multifrequency Interferometry Telescope for Radio Astronomy in Mauritius

In the context of the collaboration of South Africa and partner countries on the Square Kilometre Array Radio Telescope (SKA) project, Her Excellency Mrs. Naledi Pandor, Minister of Science and Technology of the Republic of South Africa, visited the University of Mauritius on Monday 19 September 2011. A working session was conducted with Dr the Hon. Rajeshwar Jeetah, Minister of Tertiary Education, Science, Research and Technology, University representatives and academics of the Faculty of Science and various other key partners.

The SKA Radio Telescope is one of the most powerful and sensitive telescopes, to be built in Africa. Mauritius and South Africa have also jointly embarked in the building of a low frequency array telescope, called Multifrequency Interferometry Telescope for Radio Astronomy (MITRA) with stations in both countries. Fundraising for distressed population of Somalia

While millions of people suffer from the most severe famine crisis ever known in Somalia, the local government and institutions rally in urgency to bring their contribution. Thus, during two days, from 8 to 9 September 2011, dedicated to raising funds for the distressed population of Somalia, the University of Mauritius has raised Rs 23,931 for this noble endeavour, thanks to the generosity of the University staff. To date, the United Nations fears that more than 750,000 people are at risk of starvation, with a rising death toll each day.


First year student wins the Web Design Competition 2011

“Incredible”, was the first word that crossed Kirupagaren Kanni’s mind, on hearing that he had just won the Web Design Competition 2011 during the Award Ceremony held on Tuesday 23 August at the University.

It is with a mixture of pride and astonishment that Kirupagaren made his way to Dr the Hon. Rajeshwar Jeetah, Minister of Tertiary Education, Science, Research and Technology, to collect the winning prize in the presence of participants, relatives and representatives of the different institutions involved, trying really hard to hide his smile all along. The Web Design Competition, launched on 31st January, was a joint initiative of the University of Mauritius and the Tertiary Education Commission under the aegis of the Ministry of Tertiary Education, Science, Research and Technology.
