This year marked the 44th Anniversary of Independence and the 20th Anniversary of the Republic of Mauritius. The celebrations of the Independence Day, orchestrated by the Public Relations Office, were for all a precious moment to share in unity amongst the staff, students and the UoM community in the Paul Octave Wiehe Auditorium on Friday 9 March 2012.
The podium was adorned with the colours of the National Flag: red, blue, yellow, green roses and lush overhung the scene and was surrounded on each side by columns of candles. “March 1968 is a day to be engraved in the memory of each of us as that was the date when each citizen could freely and proudly say they were Mauritians!” resounded the voice of Kishan Bugul, accompanied by the lighting of the candles by UoM boys, symbolising the flame of patriotism. More with less: Practical daily life example of efficiency improvement in the use of Energy, Water, or Materials. Students of the University of Mauritius (UoM) and the Mauritius Institute of Training and Development (MITD) participated together in a joint UoM-MITD students project competition in Engineering. The names of the winners were announced at the Award Ceremony on Thursday 15 March 2012 in the École Hôtelière Sir Gaëtan Duval, Ebène.
The prize winners and participants were awarded by Dr the Hon. Vasant Kumar Bunwaree, Minister of Education and Human Resources and Dr the Hon. Rajeshwar Jeetah, Minister of Tertiary Education, Science, Research and Technology. The winners of the first prize Miss Jamansing Gulshani, Mr Hurwanth Rajiv and Miss Bhangeeruthee Tejsree won Rs 25000 for their realistic prototype on Domestic Grey Water Solar Recycling System. On the occasion of the National Day 2012, the Rt Hon. Sir Anerood Jugnauth, G.C.S.K., K.C.M.G., Q.C., President of the Republic has conferred the awards of Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean (C.S.K.) to Prof Dhanjay Jhurry and Officer of the Order of the Star and Key (O.S.K) to Dr Louis Arnaud Carpooran.
Prof Dhanjay Jhurry, National Research Chair, Professor of Chemistry and Head of the Centre for Biomedical and Biomaterials Research of the UoM, has been honoured for his contribution in the fields of research and tertiary education. Dr Arnaud Carpooran, from the Department of French, whose research work led to the publication of the first and most comprehensive dictionary of Kreol Morisien, was awarded the honorary title of O.S.K. for his contribution in tertiary education.
