Corporate Governance and Performance for SMEs

The Faculty of Law and Management hosted a talk on Corporate Governance and Performance for Small and Medium Enterprises on Monday 26 September 2011 at the R Burrenchobay Lecture Theatre of the University. The talk was delivered by Assoc. Prof. Stuart Murrin Locke, University of Waikato, New Zealand, who also acts as External Examiner for the Faculty.

Drawing from extensive research on the SME sector in New Zealand, Prof. Locke argued that without a well articulated Corporate Governance structure and system, SMEs will be at greater risk of failure in a context of openness and increasing competition. He also made a strong case for the professionalization of the SME sector. The talk was attended by academics, students and representatives of the SMEDA (Small and Medium Enterprise Development Authority).

Developing Coaching Skills

Following a bidding exercise, a team of UoM consultants led by Mr I.Vencatachellum, from the Faculty of Law and Management, were awarded a contract for running a management development programme – ‘Developing coaching skills’ – for 75 Mauritius Telecom managers and executives. A launching ceremony was held on 20 June 2011 at the MT Tower where the two partners formalized the agreement. Under this CCRC led project, five batches of fifteen participants have been trained since 19 July 2011 and ending on 19 August 2011. During this period the participants undertook 24 hrs of training on coaching skills over three full days in a customised setting at the University of Mauritius International Business School, MIBS.

Faculty Communication Seminar Series and PR Event at FLM

The 9th of June marked the beginning of a series of Faculty Communication Seminars organized by the Faculty of Law and Management (FLM). For the launching of the event, were present the Honourable Minister of Tertiary Education, Science, Research and Technology, Dr. Rajeshwar Jeetah, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Konrad Morgan, and other eminent guests from the Industrial sector. The Faculty Communication Series was programmed over four days and a PR Event was organized to mark the end of this wonderful experience.

The main purpose of the whole event has been to strengthen communication at Faculty, university and industry level. All academics in each of the three departments of the FLM as well as support staff had the possibility to express themselves; talking about their qualifications, duties and their aspirations in view of offering a better output to the FLM and University. The Pursuit of Inclusive Economic Growth: Equality of Opportunity

The University of Mauritius and the World Bank Office in Mauritius have jointly organised a public seminar on the theme ‘The Pursuit of Inclusive Economic Growth: Equality of Opportunity’. The Seminar which was held on Tuesday 10 May 2011 at the Engineering Tower Lecture Theatre of the University of Mauritius marks the first jointly organised activity since the signature of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two institutions on the 29 June 2010.

The theme of the seminar reflects current thinking and research on those factors over which an individual has no control i.e. the personal circumstances of the individual namely parents’ education, family income, number of siblings, the presence of both parents in the house, gender, race and location of residence, and more importantly the impact which these factors, individually and collectively, have on an individual’s likelihood to succeed in life. The Seminar was opened by a presentation by Dr Marcelo Guigale, World Bank Director for Poverty Reduction and Economic Management for the Africa Region and co-author of the World Bank report entitled ‘Do Our Children Have A Chance? The 2010 Human Opportunity Report for Latin America and the Caribbean’.

UoM Students: Runners-up of the International Moot Competition on Human Rights

The UoM team composed of Ms A Budoo and Ms V Nursimooloo, both LLB (Hons) year 3 students, accompanied by Dr R P Gunput, from the Law Department, participated in Justice P.N. Bhagwati 1st International Moot Court Competition on Human Rights, organised by the Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University, New Law College, Pune. This Court competition was held from 11 to 13 March in India with the consent of the Hon. Mr Justice P.N. Bhagwati, one of India’s eminent judges and former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India. The Moot Competition is a simulation of a fictional dispute between countries before a Court of Justice.

Since its creation in 1993, the Faculty of Law and Management has strived hard to reflect international perspectives by providing innovative undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The Faculty of Law and Management presently offers a broad range of educational options to serve a diverse and changing student population from traditional undergraduates to corporate executives.
Currently 2667 undergraduates, 246 postgraduates and 10 MPhil/PhD students are registered at the Faculty of Law and Management which emerges as a Center of Excellence of Higher learning in the field of Management, Finance and Accounting and Law in Mauritius. Its rich legacy has made the Faculty of Law and Management one of the main pillars of the University of Mauritius.
